At the heart of extollet's offering was our ability to create custom responsive websites without starting from scratch. Using a design tool called Bootstrap Studio, which i rely on to this day for authoring web pages. I was able to create a compelling website that explained our offerings, past work, and gave new clients the ability to book a free consultation online. Existing clients could manage their projects and pay their bill in a self hosted and branded client portal.
With no budget to speak of and a brand that had only lived on the net for a few months. I started finding clients the only way I knew how at the time, Social Media. We created a variety of posts that lead to our case studies with the hopes that our work would make it to prospective clients feeds organically. Although we grew a modest following, it rarely turned into quality leads for our agency.
When posting failed to get extollet in front of the people who could keep us in business. I used what little money delivering for DoorDash awarded to me to order some flyers and business cards for myself. Although tastefully designed, there was no bot crawling websites, just me crawling google maps for small businesses that clearly needed some quality creative. Then showed up at the doorstep during regular business hours with a pitch. Although many sent me on my way, I managed to set myself up with more freelance work than I was capable of delivering.
My mother graduated at the top of her class with a bachelors in accounting. At 19 she was managing the books of a law firm. Throughout my parents travels she had ample opportunities at many prestigious firms. But today handles the books of a local credit union. She opted to work for a company she was passionate about, instead of pursuing the biggest paycheck she could find.
I certainly wasn't up to anything special at age 19 but I do very much believe that who you work for is far more important than how much they're paying you. My education has empowered me to work as a Creative Communications professional for a variety of businesses in the San Francisco Bay Area. I take great pride in my work and then craft the designs, copy, and code that will make it a reality.
Working for small nonprofit organizations requires one to wear "many hats," a talent I don't think I'll ever truly master, but it's a challenge I still very much enjoy taking on. Whether I'm developing long term brand strategies, enrolling our teams devices in an endpoint manager, shooting a commercial for new media, or cooking a hot meal for the team. I find far more purpose in my work (regardless of what it may be,) when I'm doing it for the little guys.
